WELLINGTON REGION

The Wellington region of New Zealand occupies the southern end of the North Island. Wellington is the capital of New Zealand. Wellington is one of New Zealand's favourite weekend destinations, with two of New Zealand's top wine regions, Wairarapa and Marlborough, within a short drive and the city has a dynamic nightlife and award winning restaurants and bars.

The influence of Maori culture is strong in Wellington - in fact, the earliest name for Wellington is thought to be the Maori "Te Upoko o Te Ika a Maui"; or "The head of Maui's fish" - and it can be easily appreciated from Wellington hotels, by visiting the Maori Treasures Gallery, New Zealand's national museum Te Papa Tongarewa, or the National Archives, where the original Treaty of Waitangi is on display. Or check out the historic Parliament Buildings, which are some of the world's largest all-wood structures, or the Birthplace of Katherine Mansfield, one of New Zealand's most famous authors. Wellington is considered by many to be the culture capital of New Zealand; after all, it is the base for the Royal New Zealand Ballet, the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, the National Opera, and many other dance and drama centres. Waikanae - The town is about 60km north of Wellington, New Zealand's capital city, and is between the towns of Paraparaumu, 8km to the southwest, and Otaki, 15km to the northeast. Many new cafes have opened up in Waikanae and Waikanae Beach to service both the locals and visitors to the beautiful Kapiti Coast. Just north of Waikanae is the small settlement of Peka Peka. The town and surrounding area is most noted for its beautiful beach and river mouth, which is opposite the long form of Kapiti Island, which lies 4km offshore in the Tasman Sea. The waters between Waikanae Beach and Kapiti Island are a marine reserve, and whales are sometimes spotted on their migration routes through the narrow corridor. The beach itself is composed of black sand, but is still great for water sports and long walks. Inland, behind Waikanae, are the Tararua Ranges and the Akatarawa Valley, home to a popular conservation park, Staglands Wildlife Reserve. Paraparaumu Beach - Paraparaumu is a town in the south western North Island of New Zealand. It lies in the Kapiti Coast, 55km north of the nation's capital city, Wellington. Paraparaumu Beach Links Golf Course has become world renowned. The only course in New Zealand played by Tiger Woods, it is regarded by many as New Zealand's best. Paraparaumu Airport is located on the eastern side of Paraparaumu Beach. Seatoun - Seatoun is a southern suburb of Wellington, the capital city of New Zealand. It is situated on the east coast of the Miramar Peninsula, close to the entrance to Wellington Harbour (formerly Port Nicholson), some seven kilometres southeast of the CBD. The suburb sits on an exposed promontory close to Barrett Reef, a dangerous area of rocky shallows upon which many ships have foundered, most notably the Inter-island ferry Wahine in 1968.
